In a hard hitting battle between the longstanding heavyweights of the Premier North the Tamworth-based Phoenix came out on top last weekend. The result leaves the Nix at a perfect 5 wins and 0 losses at the halfway point of the season.
After electing to kick the Phoenix defence forced the Pirates off the field and Patrick Daley and his offence went to work. The second year Quarterback hit WR Will Hussey for a 63 yard touchdown. The point after was blocked leaving the score at 6-0.
The Pirates, not to be outdone, came straight back at the Nix. QB Neil Baptie slung together a number of passes to move the chains before hitting WR Jamie McLaughlin who broke through the usually sure tackling of the Nix defence for the score. After converting the extra point the score was 7-6 to the Pirates and that’s how the first half stayed as the two stingy defences kept the game tantalisingly close.
It wasn’t until near the end of the 3rd quarter when kicker Alex Lenkowski hit a field goal from 35 yards out to put the Phoenix ahead 9-7.
The kick lit a much need fire in the belly of the Phoenix as the defence came alive forcing a quick 3 and out after a huge sack from LB Jake Harbon. This paved the way for the offence to march down the field with RB Elliot Walters finally scampering in for the score. The extra point was missed again which left the score 15-7 at the start of the fourth.
LB Andy Mortimer quickly picked off a Baptie throw to get the ball back but the Pirates weren’t to go down easy as on their next drive they marched the length of the field to punch the ball in. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful leaving the score at 15-13.
The Pirates would have one last chance to take the victory, the visiting offence took the field and stung together a set of good passes and runs. With less than a minute left Baptie slung the ball up only to be denied by S Oli Campbell who batted the ball down.
The win is followed by a two week break for the Tamworth outfit before they welcome local boys Coventry Jets in the Phoenix #WhiteOut game. Be sure to come down and enjoy the atmosphere at Atherstone Rugby Club, Sunday 26th June, kick off at 2:30pm. Entry is completely FREE and a great day out for all the family!
